Bug List

Today we are more advanced than ever but many things can still be improved. A paradox where solving problems creates new ones results in an endless cycle to meet public needs. Below is my list of 'bugs' in everyday life that could be opportunities for advancement.

1. Spiders making webs in my doorway create a very unpleasant surprise when rushing to leave.
• I for one am not a fan of spiders but typically bugs in and around homes (even helpful ones) tend to bother people. Also, people don't typically stop to inspect a doorway before walking through it especially if it is a familiar one. 
2. Having dishes pile up to the point where you can not use the sink.
• Having the only access to running water outside of a bath, is extremely inconvenient when we are so used to having things immediately.
3. Not enough storage in an apartment for someone who lives there year round.
• Many living spaces, especially when shared with others, lack the room necessary for living items. Forcing people to share or reduce what they use to the bare minimum.  
4. Holes in the wall, even from push pins, can mean losing your deposit.
• Piggybacking off of not having enough storage, many storage solutions that do not take up massive amounts of space require putting holes in drywall. 
5. When effectively timing your studying, timers must be set by you. Forgetting to start the timer again results in either an extra long break or exhaustingly long study period.  
• Taking breaks that are too long or studying for too long can affect the effectiveness of a study plan. 
6. Having to clean up after an animal peeing on your carpet right after you took them out. 
• A task that is time-consuming and annoying when you took the time to let the animal outside just for them to do what you were trying to prevent. 
7. Pants never fitting right unless tailored. 
• All body shapes are different from each other and no clothing (unless stretchy) will fit the shape of your body unless tailored to it. Clothes like this can be very uncomfortable or look odd. 
8. After 8pm the wifi becomes extremely slow and sometimes nonexistent. 
• Turning in homework the night it is due is impossible when the wifi will not let you access the assignment. For leisure purposes, neither Netflix or Hulu can operate without an internet connection. 
9. When it is hot outside buildings turn the a/c way too far down to where you don’t know whether to dress for the outdoor weather or the indoor a/c. 
• You can dress comfortably for one or the other but never both!
10. Having to wheel a cart of heavy spillable things downstairs that the cart can not roll over. 
• The only way to make it down the stairs with no spillage is to walk the items down, the cart, then put the items back on the cart and continue. 
11. Fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods are hard to find on short notice and cost a lot when available. 
• Eating well requires lots of planning ahead and if you don't is very expensive. Keeping food fresh and portable over time is also a challenge. 
12. Clothes shrink in the dryer and with college living, there's no room to dry them elsewhere. 
• Dryers use hot air to dry clothing quickly which melts the elastic in pants making them shrink when they cool. They need to then be broken in again and eventually lose their shape faster than if they were air dried without the heat. 
13. Charging chords wear out and break easily. 
• Charging chords are expected to bend and twist but always seem to break two months in. Even the expensive ones tend to have a short shelf life. 
14. Backpacks do not protect the contents in them very well. 
• Most backpacks are only designed to carry the items in them but when tried by life fail to keep those contents safe. 
15. Stickers leave a residue that requires special chemicals to remove. 
• Having to peel a sticker off a surface to have it still sticky and collect all dust and dirt around it is not appealing. 
16. Marston science library chairs do not have armrests making seating uncomfortable.  
• Armrests are a vital part of the stability of a chair especially when the chair leans far backward. When leaning back if you do not feel you possess the core strength to pull your self back up armrests provide that security. 
17. Food from fast food places cools too quickly. 
• Ten minutes after receiving food from a fast food restaurant it cools down to room temperature. So in order to ingest the food while it's warm it much be eaten very quickly after being served.  
18. Autocorrect is often inaccurate and does not adapt to slang. 
• Autocorrect is not always accurate and fails to adapt to modern slang because it is connected to an official dictionary. While this is helpful for grammar and spelling, conversing amongst friends can be challenging if you mistype. 
19. Bathrooms with free tampons and pads run out almost instantly. 
• While some bathrooms try to accommodate menstruating women, the products provided are either of extremely low quality or are hardly ever available. 
20. After removing and walking away from your glasses, they are incredibly hard to find again. 
• Once walking away from your glasses it is incredibly hard to find them again unless you are close enough to recognize them. 

Many of these things are not huge problems but minor inconveniences that are time sensitive. It was difficult to come up with this list since many inconveniences we used to have as a society have been solved. Typically I look at the gadgets and services that already exist to make our lives easier so finding things that still could be improved without feeling lazy was challenging.
