Reading Reflection No.3

“How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big” by Scott Adams 1) The general theme of this book is that failure helps guide you in different directions. It pushed you towards bigger and better things and should not cause you to give up. Instead, it should be seen as an opportunity.  2) The book in my, opinion, connects with a lot of the topics we have talked about in this class. Many of the assignments are geared towards helping you accept failure as a learning tool rather than discouraging.  3) If I were to create an exercise for this class I would have people seek rejection or failure. I would have students write about their failure and how it made them feel. I would also have them talk about what they learned from their failure and what they plan to change in the future.  4) I found his view on goals interesting. He views goals as problematic and oppressing. Personally, I think goals are helpful to point you in a general direction but can see how...

Your Exit Strategy

For my exit strategy, I plan to be apart of the company into my 50s. However, after it becomes profitable enough I will delegate others to take over major parts of the company. This will allow me to pursue other ventures which, I definitely plan on doing. Eventually, I will sell the company or pass down the parts I have to my children if they are interested.  I chose this strategy so that I may pursue other interests in my lifetime. Not all of my future accomplishments are centered around bringing in a profit. Many of my interests have nothing to with earning any sort of income.  My exit strategy has influenced my decisions with my concept so that I can build it quickly, set it afloat, and designate a captain. This is not something I see my self being apart of forever. I would keep my foot in the door mainly for my children if they ever decide they want to be apart of it. I plan to grow the company quickly and get to a stable point where others can take over and continue to he...

Celebrating Failure

This past semester, I have failed in many ways but the one that hit me the hardest had to do with my personal relationships. I had become blind to the fact that I was not coping with the stress of college and supporting my self. With everything feeling like it was crashing down on me, I became depressed. Instead of realizing that I was no longer happy with my self, I began to look for it in my relationships. First with friends and then with my significant other. I kept asking for more and more from them and the pressure grew to be too much. It wasn’t until they broke and told me in the heat of the moment that I had not been listening to anything they had been saying which was true. Many of the things they tried to display to me while I was asking for more did not seem important because I felt so hurt at the time but couldn’t understand why.  What I learned from this is that I need to pay attention to my perception of my self. Also, I need to listen to my significant other and reall...

Venture Concept No.1

(1) opportunity: There is an opportunity for a massively untapped market. In a day and age where appearance is everything, especially to the younger generations, how people dress has grown increasingly important. Many people avoid certain styles because major companies only cater to certain body types. Social media plays a large role in this. Where style and fashion are changing at such a rapid pace that by the time you find that perfect fit, its no longer in style. The fashion industry is enormous but hardly anyone is trying to make customization easily accessible or affordable. This market is largely targeted toward the younger generation. Older generations are not so concerned with their looks 24/7. Potential customers are currently satisfying this need by shopping with the same name brands they feel comfortable with. They are afraid to branch out because it would take time to figure out how other companies size and fits work for them. Potential customers are also wearing the same...

What's Next?

Two of the three people I interviewed said relatively the same thing. Both agreed my business venture was a good idea and neither had ever heard of anything like it. As far as logistics go they saw no reason for it not to be possible. The third person also thought it was a good idea however, did not think going with the United States Postal service was the right option. Instead, he made the suggestion of having my own people deliver and possibly even come to take measurements. Almost like a traveling tailor. With this idea in mind, the only way I could see this working resource-wise is by starting very small and basing my self in a single town with a store to work out of. My market would change and but would still be able to use an app.  A radically different market that I could pursue would be businessmen and women. Most of these people, however, have their suits and clothing custom-tailored by the companies that make them. However, if I were to employ this house call suggestion ...

Your Venture's Unfair Advantage

Access to experienced tailors        I personally know multiple tailors with more than 30 years of experience between them. This resource is valuable in that the career of a tailor is a fleeting one. Tailoring takes a lot of practice to be good at and their jobs and abilities are very specific.  Access to experienced seamstresses  My personal connections with a few semstresses is very valuable. This is another dying profession and one that also takes a lot of practice to make a career out of.  Contacts with other entrepreneurs  My contacts with othe entrepreneurs gives me an edge for what to expect when tryign to start up a buisness. It is not a rare resourece because there are many entrepreneures out there and it is not hard to copy by others. However, entrepreneures are unique in the experiences that they have.  Experience in coding and computer software  My experience in coding and computer software will help wit...

Growing Your Social Capical

Delisa’s background is originally in chemical water treatment but later on, pursued her passion for fitness and sewing. She now owns her own gym and is a seamstress on the side. She will be filling the slot of a domain expert in my industry because she has experience in entrepreneurship and sewing. I contacted her through Twitter originally and we had a conversation over that messaging system. She seemed very excited to talk about her recent endeavors and to share her experience as a female business owner. She will enhance my understanding of tailoring and the limits of what can be done for someone who is not physically there to tailor for.        I met with the manager of Joanne fabrics, Amy. She had been working there for 11 years and runs pretty much the entire store. She will be filling the slot of marketing expert because of her background in advertising the front of the store. After talking to one of my other connections I asked to speak t...

Reading Reflection No.2

For this reading reflection, I decided to read the book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck. What is the general theme or argument of the book? The general theme of this book was based on the idea that there are two kinds of mindsets. Fixed mindsets believe your qualities are “carved into stone” or set in their ways. Growth mindsets believe that basic qualities have the ability to change. People with the latter don’t hide their struggles or shortcomings. Instead, they view these as challenges and attempt to overcome them. People with fixed mindsets, on the other hand, do not take failure well.  How did the book connect or enhance what you are learning in this class?   The book enhanced what we are learning in class because it reinforced that failure is just a part of the learning process. Some of the feedback I have received was taken to heart when it should not have been. This is an opportunity for improvement not saying that I, my sel...

Elevator Pitch No.3

I did not receive any feedback on my last elevator pitch but I tried to explain my idea a bit more clearly. Also, I dressed nicer and Changed my backdrop yet again.

Elevator Pitch No.2

My last elevator pitch went very well. I conveyed my point clearly and was able to keep a great tone and pace. One of the comments I received was that I showed great confidence in my idea which drove my point across.   I did not change much from my last elevator pitch. The background and outfit I choose were different. Also, I gave a bit more emotion during my pitch but used almost the exact same script.

Create A Customer Avatar

Image
My prototypical customer is busy almost all of the time. A mother or student who is working towards their goals in life. They may not be the best in shape or have a typical body type or shape so they don’t shop often. Usually wearing the same clothes week after week. After a while, their clothes don’t fit the same as they once did. Their hobbies probably include music and are creative or value aesthetics and art. How they present them self is important to them. They probably watch Netflix on occasion and may have time to read now and then but are usually to caught up in the hustle of daily life. If they’re older they may feel younger than they are because of how active they are in society and at home. None of these people are among the upper class. Most likely living in an apartment or a smaller house with not much access to tailor-fitted clothing. I have a few things in common with this person. My hobby is music and I think that’s more of a personal preference than anything else. I am...

Idea Napkin No.2

I am a student at UF. I have skills in customer service and music appreciation. I’m not sure exactly what I want to do career wise but I would like to give people the same opportunities for success and help people realize that success is defined differently for everyone. I am offering a service for customers to help them feel more confident in the clothes they wear. Not all clothing is designed to fit all body types. Being able to tailor something to your self is going to improve all the struggles associated with ill-fitted clothing. I am offering this to US customers who have access to an app and a way to mail packages.   People are very focused on appearances, the beauty industry is an example of that. Clothing when it is not fitting can be extremely troublesome especially when you feel that nothing looks right on you. Feeling confident in the clothing you wear is the reason some people shop at specific brands over others.   This service takes mass-produced si...

What's Your Secret Sauce

I am apart of a wide variety of social groups that do not have much to do with each other. Many of my friends would not get along with each other and I can sympathize with all of them. I am very open minded and see the best in a lot of situations. My parents are immigrants and I have traveled to many different countries.  I did not realize that I at times can be a bit self-centered which multiple people brought up. I was also surprised to hear that people thought I had a very positive outlook on life. Being a caring person is something I have always prided my self in.
